DMITRI TERTYSHNY: 1976-1999
Hearts are heavy in Philadelphia and Chelyabinsk, Russia following a tragic boating accident Friday that claimed the life of Flyers D DMITRI TERTYSHNY (Russia).
The 22-year-old blueliner was killed when he fell off the bow of a small boat, got swept under the craft, and was struck by its propeller, officials at the scene reported. The accident happened in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, where Tertyshny and 10 other members of the Philadelphia organization were attending a skating clinic. There were 3 other people -- including Philadelphia draftee MIKHAIL CHERNOV (Russia) -- on the rental boat when the accident happened.
Drafted 132nd overall in 1995, Tertyshny spent the 1994-95 through 1997-98 seasons with his hometown club in Chelyabinsk. Last season, he surprised the Flyers -- who included his photo-less bio in the AHL Philadelphia Phantoms section of the 1998-99 media guide -- by making the team out of training camp. He finished his rookie season with 2 goals and 10 points in 62 games, and the club saw nothing but a bright future for the young Russian.
"I always thought he'd be with us for a long time," Flyers GM Bob Clarke told The Philadelphia Inquirer. "We felt he was really developing as a player and would have continued to develop."
Added C Eric Lindros: "He was an all-star in the making. He was just a terrific player and loved the game."
Tertyshny leaves behind a wife, Pauline, who was reportedly spending the summer at their home in Chelyabinsk expecting the couple's first child.
The Flyers say they haven't decided how Tertyshny's memory will be honored this season.

Game Story
PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- John LeClair scored with 6:07 remaining to give the Philadelphia Flyers a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings.

Rookie Dmitri Tertyshny, who also set up Jim Montgomery's tying goal in the second period, poked the puck off the left boards. LeClair fired a blast from the top of the slot that beat Kevin Hodson to the glove side for his fourth preseason goal.
Philadelphia's Eric Lindros, who is enjoying a torrid exhibition season, suffered a groin injury early in the first period and did not return.
The Flyers jumped to a 1-0 lead 1:48 into the opening period on Dainius Zubrus' second preseason goal. But Detroit rookie Stacey Roest tied it before the period ended with his fourth tally and offseason acquisition Uwe Krupp put the Red Wings ahead just under eight minutes into the second.
Hodson stopped 26 shots, while John Vanbiesbrouck made 24 saves for Philadelphia.

LeClair extends lead in Flyers win
PHOENIX (AP) -- John LeClair scored Philadelphia's first two goals and John Vanbiesbrouck had 32 saves as the Flyers defeated the Phoenix Coyotes 4-1 Tuesday night.
LeClair, who increased his NHL lead over teammate Eric Lindros to five goals with his 36th and 37th, also had two assists as the Flyers won for the first time in five games (1-2-2).
Young Russian defenseman Dmitri Tertyshny got his first NHL goal in his 43rd game, and Eric Desjardins also scored for the Flyers. Keith Jones had three assists.
Vanbiesbrouck, coasting with a 4-0 lead, gave up a goal to Phoenix's Trevor Hansen 8:43 into the third period. It cost him his seventh shutout, which would have moved him out of a tie with Nikolai Khabibulin for second in the NHL.
Khabibulin had 37 saves, but was overwhelmed by the accuracy and variety of Philadelphia's offense, especiall in the second period when the Flyers put 20 shots on net and scored on two of them.
Jimmy Waite was in goal on Sunday, when Anaheim also jumped to a 4-0 lead and beat the Coyotes 5-1. The Coyotes had lost two straight two other times this season, but not by such embarrassing margins.
The Flyers took a 1-0 lead 9:40 into Tuesday's game when Lindros dug the puck off the boards and passed it to Chris Therien at the blue line. LeClair, at the top of the circle, deflected Therien's slap shot under the crossbar.
The Coyotes appeared to have tied it 30 seconds into a power play lte in the first period. But Jeremy Roenick's rebound goal was disallowed after officials determined that Daniel Briere was in the crease.
Replays showed Briere's skate was barely, but clearly, over the line.
LeClair made it academic in the second period when he scored on his own rebound with 9:41 left, and 3:25 later passed to Tertyshny, whose shot hit the bar, dropped onto Khabibulin's back and trickled in as the desperate goalie tried to sit on the puck.
Desjardins scored 3:39 into the third.

Brind'Amour's got the power
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Rod Brind'Amour scored two power-play goals and Ron Hextall made 22 saves as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Washington Capitals 2-1 on Saturday night.
Brian Bellows scored the only goal for the Capitals (8-13-3), who have lost four of their last five games.
Brind'Amour, who leads Philadelphia (12-8-4) with 13 power-play points, put the Flyers ahead at 10:13 of the first period when he tapped in a rebound of a shot by John LeClair.
It was the 215th goal as a member of the Flyers for Brind'Amour, moving him into eighth place on the team's all-time list.
Brind'Amour scored his 11th with 2:47 left in the second when he deflected Dmitri Tertyshny's slap shot from the slot past Washington goaltender Rick Tabaracci, who made 26 saves.
Hextall was sharp as he narrowly missed his 24th career shutout. His best saves came on power-play attempts by Bellows in the first period, Andrei Nikolishin late in the second period, and Richard Zednik midway through the third.
Philadelphia centre Mark Bureau was forced to leave the game when a puck hit him in the forehead with 7:36 left in the third period.
The game was the first of eight straight away from home for the Capitals, the longest stretch on the road in the franchise's 25-year history.

Flames earn tie in tough match
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Cory Stillman's power-play goal at 6:59 of the third period helped Calgary erase a pair of two-goal deficits and tie the Philadelphia Flyers 3-3 in a penalty-filled game Thursday night.
Clarke Wilm and Jeff Shantz also scored for the Flames in a game that featured three goals in a 1:49 stretch in the third period.
Petr Svoboda, Mikael Renberg, and Mark Bureau scored for the Flyers, who were unable to hold on to a 2-0 lead in the second period and a 3-1 advantage in the third.
Stillman scored his 10th goal from the slot on a perfectly executed play that featured pinpoint passes by Andrew Cassels and Theo Fleury, who had two assists.
A total of 62 penalty minutes were called in the game, including 30 in the second period which featured two major fights and minor penalties assessed against both goaltenders.
Calgary's Jean Sebastien Giguere came out of the net to throw a punch at Philadelphia's Roman Vopat, who was in a shoving match with Calgary defenseman Steve Smith. John Vanbiesbrouck, the Flyers' goaltender, then skated the length of the ice to shove Giguere.
Svoboda gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead on a power play at 2:51 of the second period with a slap shot from the right circle.
Renberg, who was obtained in a trade with Tampa Bay on Dec. 12, scored his first goal for Philadelphia at 13:13 when he stuffed a backhander past Giguere from the right of the net.
Wilm brought the Flames within 2-1 at 1:29 of the second period with a shorthanded goal when he poked in a rebound of a shot by Fleury.
Bureau made it 3-1 Philadelphia at 2:28 when he redirected an attempt by Luke Richardson. Shantz scored for Calgary on another rebound 50 seconds later when Vanbiesbrouck couldn't handle Housley's initial shot.
Calgary, which is 2-1-1 on a five-game road trip that ends at New Jersey on Friday, had an apparent goal by Valeri Bure disallowed at 4:35 of the second period when Jarome Iginla was detected in the crease.
Each team had an excellent scoring chance in overtime. Vanbiesbrouck smothered a shot from just outside the crease by Fleury and Giguere stopped a wrist shot from the slot by Eric Lindros. Philadelphia also had a power play for the final 26 seconds but was unable to get a shot on net.

Philadelphia 2, N.Y. Islanders 2
Reported as of 12:04 a.m., Wed., Mar. 10
UNIONDALE, New York (Ticker) -- The New York Islanders may be going nowhere this season but they continue to be a thorn in the side of the sputtering Philadelphia Flyers, whose winless streak reached a season-high eight games following a 2-2 deadlock.
The Islanders are last in the Atlantic Division and 20 points out of the final Eastern Conference playoff berth but moved to 2-1-2 against the Flyers this season.
"We're just trying to contain one of the better teams in the league," Islanders coach Bill Stewart said. "For us to surive against Toronto and the elite teams in the league that put the puck to the net consistently, that's the type of style we have to play."
New York's Tommy Salo stopped 33 shots, including three in overtime. He made a stick save on Mikael Renberg's turnaround slap shot from the slot with 2:24 left in the extra session.
The Islanders' best scoring chance of overtime came at the two-minute mark. Sergei Nemchinov attempted to send a pass down low to Claude Lapointe but the puck hit Lapointe's skate and banked off the side of the net.
Zigmund Palffy scored in the first period and assisted on Mark Lawrence's power-play tally in the second for the Islanders, who are winless in five straight (0-3-2). New York, however, is 6-0-2 in its last eight home games against Philadelphia since April 2, 1996.
"This was good because we came from behind," Lawrence said. "We battled and we never gave up. I thought we played a good 60 minutes tonight."
"We were playing our type of game tonight, we were battling," Islanders defenseman Rich Pilon added. "It was a good point tonight. It wasn't like the other night when we lost that point."
The Islanders were burned for three goals over the final 3:06 of regulation in Saturday's 3-3 tie at Philadelphia.
Rookie
Dmitri Tertyshny and Daymond Langkow had power-play goals for the Flyers, who skated to their third straight tie and are 0-5-3 since February 21.
"We were trying to do too much right off the bat and we didn't get too many shots," Langkow said. "So we came in after the first and regrouped, went out and got some shots. We had some chances but we didn't get a break."
"It was good to see
Tertyshny score and Langkow score and they did a real good job against their big line," said Flyers goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck, who made 20 saves. "We just never could widen the margin."
Tertyshny opened the scoring 5:17 into the game with his second goal, firing a slapper past Salo's stick side from the left faceoff circle.
Palffy answered 1:51 later with his 16th goal. He skated down the left boards and blasted a slapper by Vanbiesbrouck for his fourth goal in as many games. Palffy has four goals and seven assists in his last seven contests.
Langkow's slap shot from the left point found its way between Salo's pads at 10:31 of the second period, giving Philadelphia a 2-1 lead.
"Daymond played very well. We put him on the point and he really looked good back there," Flyers coach Roger Neilson said. "He's a guy that's quick and certainly we're going to give him a good look back there. He got a shot away quickly and made a couple of good plays down low. He did a real good job there."
Lawrence closed the scoring with 3:10 left in the second, deflecting Kenny Jonsson's shot from the slot past Vanbiesbrouck.
"I was standing in front of the net. (Robert) Reichel and Ziggy were working it around, they opened it up and passed it back up to Kenny," Lawrence said. "He had a lane and I was the only one standing in front of him and he just shot it. It got my stick."
Before the game, the Islanders traded defenseman Scott Lachance to the Montreal Canadiens for a third-round draft pick.
