TORONTO (Ticker) -- Sergei Berezin scored twice and rookie Tomas Kaberle had two assists as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Carolina Hurricanes, 5-1.
Berezin snapped a 1-1 tie midway through the second period. Goaltender Felix Potvin made a crisp outlet pass to Jason Smith at the blue line. He shoveled ahead to Berezin, who broke into the Hurricanes zone and veered left before flipping a backhander past Trevor Kidd.

Berezin added his fourth preseason goal in the third period between scores by Darby Hendrickson and Niklas Andersson as the Maple Leafs tallied three times in a span of 3 1/2 minutes.
Potvin stopped 24 shots as Toronto improved its exhibition mark to 6-1-1.
Kaberle, who has a good chance of making the club, assisted on Mats Sundin's power-play goal in the first period that evened the score and set up Hendrickson's marker in the third.
Kidd stopped 21 shots and Jeff O'Neill scored the only goal for the Hurricanes (5-3-0), who did not record a shot for the first 12 1/2 minutes of the third period
