Kaberle played in his first NHL game on October 10 against the Detroit Red Wings and led all Toronto players with 29:13 minutes played. He recorded his first NHL point with an assist versus Edmonton on October 13, and his first goal 10 days later on October 23.
In 1997-98, Kaberle played with Poldi Kladno of the Czech League, scoring four goals and 19 assists in 47 games, and represented Czech Republic at the World Juniors, scoring a goal and an assist in seven games.
Excelling in hockey is a family tradition. His father Frantisek Kaberle played on the Czech national team, skated in the 1984 Canada Cup tournament, and now coaches in Japan. Tomas has a brother, Frantisek Jr., playing in Sweden's elite league.
Kaberle likes offensive hockey. He grew up idolizing NHL defencemen Ray Bourque and Paul Coffey
